“Home Away From Home”
Kevin Weir - Feb 2017

Freddie and Liesl, thanks for a lovely stay. Really, I have no reason to visit Upington—let alone stay for two nights—other than you guys and the amazing vibe that there is at Aardwolf Backpackers.

Best value backpackers in SA!”
Trip Advisor - 2015

I stayed at the Aardwolf with my girlfriend for two nights, once before heading to the Kgalagadi and once on our return. The staff was incredibly friendly and picked us up from the bus station and even took us to the airport where we had rented a car. The place itself was very clean and had a great kitchen. It was also well located right next to a big mall where we could get anything we needed for our trip to the Kgalagadi. And as far as price goes it was fantastic value, if anything I felt like it was underpriced.

I had a 3-night stay at Aardwolf in early December 2014. I found the facilities to be basic, but satisfactory. The owner Liesl is an absolute gem and really went out of her way to make me feel at home during my stay an Aardwolf. At R150 per night for a private room this has definitely been the best value backpackers I’ve stayed at in South Africa. Good location too – just a 5 minute walk to the ‘Kalahari Mall’ where you will find supermarkets, a pharmacy, eateries, clothing stores etc. etc.

Liesl and her husband are in the process of doing the place up and she was fretting about increasing the rates to cover costs. Seems to me a price-rise is long overdue! All the best to Liesl with your endeavour – Aardwolf may be the only backpackers in Upington, but it has character and my stay there far outstripped subsequent stays in newer, fancier hostels in some of the bigger urban centres in S.A.

“Friendly, well-priced budget option for Upington”
Trip Advisor - 2013

I was welcomed warmly at Liesl's guesthouse and enjoyed meeting her, her
husband and son and chatting about life in Upington. Liesl was kind
enough to take a last minute reservation by phone and gave me the last
room available. It was very clean and had loads of character, wooden
floors, nice pastel grey walls, and just across from the clean bathroom
facilities. Other guests staying there were an eclectic mix of people
from all over. Safe parking for my car on the premises. Right on the
main street, convenient to everything in town, and just perfect as a
stopping off point between the Northern Cape and Johannesburg. I would
most definitely come back. And thanks, Liesl, for offering to help with
tips for my next trip - to Kgalagadi, which is 100+ km away, so Aardwolf
would most definitely be the perfect stop on the way there. A great
option for those looking for clean, friendly, affordable accomodations
in Upington.
